In 2018, LEGO announced a new system for motorising sets, to replace the ‘Power Functions’ system. Early in release several names were used including ‘Control+’ and ‘Power Functions v2’, but, by 2020, the line was unified under the LEGO ‘Powered Up’ theme. This new system is controlled via Bluetooth using a smartphone app rather than a physical controller. LEGO launched two flagship sets to display the new system's functionality: the 4x4 X-Treme Off-Roader (42099) and this set, the Liebherr R 9800 Excavator (42100). Physically and electrically, the Powered Up system components are compatible with all other LEGO systems using the same 6-pin plug (including WeDo 2.0, Boost, Spike Prime and Mindstorms v4).

This kit is brand-new and unopened. The original box is slightly creased on the top edge (but not split open - see photo); it was received in this condition when I originally purchased it some years ago, since which it has been stored in a dry spare room in a child-free, pet-free, smoke-free environment.
