Land Rover Defender Among 24K JLR SUVs Recalled for Power Loss

Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 23,677 vehicles in the US because a fault in their DC-DC converters can cause a loss of drive power and exterior lighting, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall covers nine model ranges with 48-volt hybrid systems: the 2020–2024 Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover and Land Rover Defender; the 2021–2024 Jaguar E-Pace, Jaguar F-Pace, Range Rover Velar and Land Rover Discovery; and the 2019–2024 Range Rover Sport.

This is a smaller group than the nine-model recall JLR filed with NHTSA in April 2026, which involved 170,169 vehicles over a similar DC-DC converter problem. NHTSA documents state that an investigative committee and an AI model found a software issue that could cause overloads similar to those addressed by the earlier recall, as well as a software bug that could make the converter go offline at startup. The earlier fix is described in the documents as having resolved hardware-related issues with the converter.

According to NHTSA documents, affected vehicles can experience a DC-DC converter failure and overloaded current during high-demand periods because of insufficient electrical load balancing. If the converter fails, warning lights tell the driver to stop when safe. As the battery loses charge, the vehicle can coast to a stop and lose exterior lighting.

JLR has identified 10,973 Range Rover Sport, 8,100 Defender, 3,849 Range Rover and 552 Discovery models with potential converter failure. Smaller groups include 79 Jaguar F-Paces, 76 Range Rover Velars, 35 Range Rover Evoques, 10 Jaguar E-Paces and three Land Rover Discovery Sports. Between April and September 2026, JLR received 393 claims and field reports. No injuries or accidents have been reported.

Dealers will install a software update at no cost to owners. The update is intended to correct the bug, improve load balancing and add a "limp home" mode if the converter goes offline. Owners of identified vehicles will be notified by 13 November 2026.
